‘Poster Art of the Disney Parks’ Arriving Soon at Disney Parks

Cover of 'Poster Art of the Disney Parks'

I recently visited California, where I had one of the most amazing experiences of my Disney career. Imagineer Vanessa Hunt gave me a tour of the Walt Disney Imagineering Art Library vault in Glendale. This place houses the original art of the most iconic images from Disney Parks’ history. Incredible! Vanessa shared that fellow Imagineer Danny Handke and she have written a book for Disney Editions called “Poster Art of the Disney Parks.” This hardcover book, with cover designed by Imagineer Glendon Lee, is coming to Disney Parks at the end of May. I asked Danny about the role that attraction posters have played.

Vanessa Hunt and Danny Handke, Authors of 'Poster Art of the Disney Parks'

“Attraction posters entice, excite and educate guests with a preview of the adventures and experiences inside the Disney Parks,” explained Danny.

“When Disneyland park opened in 1955, it was difficult for guests to understand what a ‘theme park’ was. The Disney Imagineers needed a solution to portray their attractions to a diverse audience. The idea to use posters at Disneyland’s Main Entrance was the perfect solution.”

The book was in development for four years! They conducted extensive research by interviewing close to 20 people, including current and former artists. Vanessa said that they put extra effort into making a beautiful book that all Disney fans could enjoy.

Poster Art in 'Poster Art of the Disney Parks'

“We made an extra effort to ensure the posters in the book were printed as color accurate as possible,” continued Vanessa. “We even found a box containing several poster concepts that had never been published until now. The most challenge part was identifying artists. While many unidentified posters artists were later identified during our interviews, there are some that remain credited to ‘Unknown Artist.’”

I asked Danny about his favorite poster.

“I love the Tokyo DisneySea posters,” said Danny. “They are interesting because they reflect an overall cohesive design, but are stylistically individual to each land. Not many fans are familiar with the Tokyo DisneySea posters, so we hope everyone will appreciate this unique chapter in the book.”

Vanessa said her favorite poster comes from the Disneyland Resort.

“I love all of them, but the one that catches my eye every time I open the drawer is the Grand Canyon Diorama poster from Disneyland,” explained Vanessa. “The colors are absolutely beautiful and the train design is fantastic!”

Which is your favorite attraction poster? I vote Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room!

Thomas on May 18th, 2012 at 9:26 am

Will this book also contain Disneyland Paris art and will it be available there?

Steven Miller on May 18th, 2012 at 3:05 pm

@Thomas – I spoke with Vanessa again who shared a few more fun facts about the book:

- Currently, the book will only be released in the US but it does contain posters for Disneyland Resort Paris, Tokyo Disney Resort, and Hong Kong Disneyland.

- There are close to 300 posters and poster concepts in the book.

- There are several “never before seen” posters including a very special poster courtesy of Drew Struzan who did the artwork for the Indiana Jones Adventure. It looks amazing! There is even a poster concept for Horizons, my all time favorite attraction!

- Almost all of the original 1950s Disneyland posters were re-scanned for this book, allowing them to be printed with accurate colors for the first time since the original silk-screens were displayed in the Park. And it shows! The quality of the printing and the colors in the book are gorgeous!

Diana from SC on May 18th, 2012 at 9:57 am

Will you only be able to purchase this from certain places in the parks, or will you be able to buy it online anywhere?
We are planning a trip in October, will they still be available then?

Erica on May 18th, 2012 at 10:08 am

How did I know your favorite attraction poster would be the Enchanted Tiki Room? Awesome post! I’m sure your visit to the WDI Art Library was very magical.

I’d have to say… my favorite attraction posters are The Haunted Mansion (WDW) and Spaceship Earth.

Steven Miller on May 18th, 2012 at 12:47 pm

@Thomas – Yes. The book contains art from Disneyland Resort Paris. I’m unsure, however, if it will be carried at the Resort. I know that it is coming to Disneyland and Walt Disney World for sure.

@Diana – I would look in select locations that already carry an assortment of books. I know there are locations on Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland or Once Upon a Toy at Downtown Disney Marketplace in Florida. The book will be carried at Disneyland and Walt Disney World only for a few months. It will then be carried via the national market later this year.

@Erica – Right on! Just wait – the book is beautiful and you will love, love, love the artwork. I don’t want to spoil it but needless to say, you will be thrilled.

Robby on May 18th, 2012 at 10:13 am

I always loved seeing the posters in the railroad tunnels at the entrance to both Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom at Disney World. It added to the anticipation!

Is there some way to tell the decision makers about making a book of the Annie Leibovitz promotional photos? I’d love to have a book of those.

Thanks

Paul from PA on May 18th, 2012 at 10:31 am

I will be down in the world in the end of June and I am hoping to pick this up when I am there. I have always loved the posters! Do you know where it will be sold and how much it will be?

Randy on May 18th, 2012 at 10:52 am

The new book, Poster Art of the Disney Parks looks really amazing! What a great piece of Disney history to own! Do you know how much the book will cost, and if we can order it online or by calling the Disney Parks Merchandise number once it comes out in a few weeks?

Steven Miller on May 18th, 2012 at 1:49 pm

@Paul and Randy – The book will retail for $40.00. It measures 14-inches tall by 11 1/2-inches wide. It’s a fantastic oversized book which really makes for a great presentation of the artwork.

I spoke with Betsy, the product developer for media at Disney Theme Park Merchandise, about the locations. It will be carried at locations that currently carry an assortment of books. Examples include Disneyana on Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland, Off the Page at Disney California Adventure, Animation Gallery at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and more.

Another option would be to contact Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Merchandise Guest Services once the book is released. Their contact information is 1-877-560-6477 or email: merchandiseguestservices@disney.go.com

Amazon has it for Pre-Sale. Release date September!
Mine is preordered!!

Kathleen on May 18th, 2012 at 11:49 am

When I was a kid my favorite thing was the illustrated maps of the park. I had these huge maps of Disneyland on the walls of my bedroom watching the changes over time. I would love to see those come back.

Jennifer on May 18th, 2012 at 11:52 am

I definitely MUST have this book!! Will it be on sale online at all or just at Disneyland??
I am so excited to get a copy!!

Nicole on May 18th, 2012 at 12:24 pm

Stephen on May 18th, 2012 at 12:50 pm

Already pre-ordered this. Can’t believe it’s taken so long for something like this to be made. Love that the Japanese Tower of Terror poster is in there, I love that version.

Tyler on May 18th, 2012 at 12:50 pm

How much will this be? This looks awesome!!!

Steven Miller on May 18th, 2012 at 1:54 pm

@Amy – Thanks for the heads up. The book will be carried at Disney Parks only for a few months. It will then be released to the national market in the Fall.

@Kathleen – I did the same thing!! I loved those maps. The early EPCOT Center one is incredible. Casey Jones, an artist with Disney Design Group, has it hanging on his office wall now. Lucky!!

@Jennifer – The book will be carried at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. I don’t know of any plans at this point to carry it via the Disney Parks online store – http://www.DisneyParks.com/Store

@Stephen – The book in incredible. I just finished looking at it this morning and you will be thrilled. Great posters from Tokyo Disney Resort! Makes me want to visit that place again.

@Tyler – The book will retail for $40.00. And trust me, it’s beyond awesome … like be-awesome!!

Any chance we’ll see an increase in the offerings at the Art on Demand posters? I’d love to be able to purchase some of these in full size.

This is a GREAT idea!

robert on May 18th, 2012 at 2:45 pm

Looking forward to picking this up at WDW!!!!! This sounds like something really special!

Rochelle on May 18th, 2012 at 3:13 pm

I’m looking at my copy of the Enchanted Tiki Room poster right now. It’s in the same room as my computer. My husband’s uncle was a voice for the Hawaiian War Chant from the tikis. I love hearing him!

D. on May 18th, 2012 at 4:03 pm

To me, these poster were not attraction posters…but TRAVEL posters. Much like the WPA National Park serigraph posters. Shall I first travel to Africa and the Amazon?…or out west to the great frontier? Or perhaps score get some pixie dust and travel to Fantasyland. Sounds like a great book, hope it has my old stomping grounds in it, the Tahitian Terrace…or maybe the TT it didn’t have one.

Jason on May 18th, 2012 at 4:53 pm

this will be a definite purchase!!!

Jason on May 18th, 2012 at 4:53 pm

Oh and I love the 20k leagues under the sea posters from WDW

Samantha on May 18th, 2012 at 6:07 pm

I have a lot of those framed on my walls. They are my favorite art! So excited for the book.

Hilary on May 19th, 2012 at 12:53 am

This book looks amazing. I am a huge fan of Disney poster art, and my all time favorite is the Jungle Cruise I’m biased though because I was a Jungle Cruise Skipper during my Disney College Program.

Bryan on May 19th, 2012 at 1:15 pm

Are there any Epcot posters in there? I’ve love to see some from the early days, and then from the 90s too.

HGTV’s Genevieve Gorder Appearing at Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival

Wow! I can’t believe it’s the last weekend of the 19th annual Epcot International Flower Garden Festival already. Seventy-five days go by pretty fast!

We’ve had a wonderful time, with all the seminars, colorful plant and flower displays, beloved Disney topiaries, brilliant botanicals, unique gardens, and especially the appearances by stars from our favorite shows on HGTV, our presenting sponsor. They’ve just been fantastic!

This weekend features an appearance by Genevieve Gorder, who, along with her thriving professional design business in New York City, is the star of not one, but two hit HGTV shows: “Dear Genevieve” and “HGTV Design Star.”

Earlier this year, we caught up with Genevieve in Los Angeles where she was filming this season’s “Design Star,” new episodes of which start airing Tuesday, May 29. The producers of the show graciously allowed us to tape on the actual “Design Star” “judging” stage. It was very exciting to be in the place where HGTV favorites like David Bromstad, Antonio Ballatore and current champ Meg Caswell all became household names.

Genevieve talked with us about how her discussions this weekend, titled “Turning Your Landscape Inside Out,” will focus on using the aesthetics of creating a great landscape in your home decorating.

Genevieve was just great. If you get a chance, you should really come see her at the Festival. Today, Saturday, and Sunday, she will lead seminars at the Festival Center, presented by HGTV.

You can also catch her on the new season (Season 6) of “Design Star,” on Tuesdays this summer at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT, starting on May 29, and on “Dear Genevieve,” on Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. CT.

For more information on the 19th annual Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival, presented by HGTV, you can check out disneyworld.com/flower.

Aulani and Laniwai Make the Conde Nast Traveler ‘Hot List’ for 2012

If you picked up the May issue of Conde Nast Traveler, you may already know that Aulani, a Disney Resort Spa, Ko Olina, Hawai`i, is one of 12 U.S. hotels included on the “Hot List” for 2012. Also on the list, in the spa category, is Laniwai, a Disney Spa at Aulani.

Conde Nast Traveler’s annual May Hot List is the ultimate insider’s guide to the hottest new hotels, spas and restaurants of the year. Editors traveled to 49 countries and evaluated 172 new hotels to discover the best in the world, and Aulani was included among the best.

Aulani and Laniwai Make the Conde Nast Traveler Hot List for 2012

In their evaluation, Conde Nast editors particularly cited “the resort’s main attraction…the pool area” (aka Waikolohe Valley) and noted, “Apart from meet-and-greets with Mickey and Minnie and themed activities like ‘Surf’s Up’ time with Chip and Dale, the property feels more like a five-star family-focused resort than a Disney showcase. And it lives up to its promise to educate kids about Hawaiian culture…”

The Waikolohe Valley at Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa

The “Hot Spas” citation noted the six outdoor rain showers and the “tranquil, wood-paneled” interior, and observed “excellent technicians choose just the right massage pressure and products.” Of course the Aulani and Laniwai teams always strive to provide Disney levels of quality and service, so it’s nice to be recognized by veteran travelers.

Sights & Sounds at Disney Parks: A Little Bit Micky, a Little Bit Mickey

When you’re part of a family, you try to take care of things for one another. Forty-five years ago, four young performers changed from complete strangers to a literal band of brothers, named Micky, Davy, Mike and Peter. The Monkees were a lightning-in-a-bottle international entertainment phenomenon. And in Epcot’s World Showcase, where great nations of the world share culture, flavor and fun, it became a tradition for Davy Jones to perform during the Epcot International Flower Garden Festival’s Flower Power Concert Series.

After he learned of the untimely passing of the Manchester, England-born song and dance man, and how it rocked his legions of fans, Micky stepped up to continue the Epcot tradition. He will perform live on the America Gardens Theatre stage this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 18–20, at 5:15, 6:30 and 7:45 p.m.
The

Micky is the first to agree that there is no way to replace his friend. “David was the brother I never had,” he says. “I only wish I didn’t have to appear in his place, but rather perform beside him — which I did as a surprise last year during a few of his concerts.”

This weekend marks Micky’s first solo engagement at Epcot — though it’s far from his first Disney project. “I was a Disneyland kid, growing up in Southern California,” he recalls. “I went there all the time with my parents, my sisters and friends. During The Monkees, we performed in the Disney Parks in Florida and California, more times than I can remember.”
The

In fact, when The Monkees were experiencing perhaps the greatest pop band reunion in history, Walt Disney World Resort was celebrating its 15th birthday. Micky joined Peter Tork and Davy Jones for some Monkees songs from Magic Kingdom Park on a splashy network TV special, co-hosted by Betty White.
The

Micky’s numerous Disney connections don’t stop there. When Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida toured the country, Micky became so successful as the villainous “Zoser” that he joined the Broadway company. Musical theater has become one of his passions, in addition to being an accomplished director, producer and, of course, multi-million selling recording artist. (Micky’s most recent albums include a spectacular tribute to Carole King called King for a Day.)

Cartoon fans know him as the voice of “Arthur”—a.k.a.”The Moth”—on The Tick, “Skip” on Hanna-Barbera’s Funky Phantom, and many more. “I was even considered to become the voice of Mickey Mouse!” he smiles, adding a spot-on “Hi folks! Ha, ha! Gosh, that’s swell!”
The

Micky as Mickey? Maybe when we see this versatile artist live during this, the final weekend of the Epcot International Flower Garden Festival, we might find ourselves humming, “M-I-C… K-Y-D… O-L-E-N-Z!” After the concerts, we’ll be checking in with Micky about his Epcot adventures, so watch the Disney Parks Blog for our follow-up report. Anything you want us to ask him?

Disneyland Resort Ticket Price Update

Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park

As we have done in the past, we wanted to give our loyal Disney Parks Blog readers a heads-up that ticket prices at the Disneyland Resort will be increasing, starting on May 20. This summer is one of the most anticipated times in the resort’s history, and a visit to the Disneyland Resort has never been a better value. In the past few years alone, we’ve added new world-class attractions, such as The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, “World of Color” and Star Tours: The Adventures Continue. Now, with the expansion of Disney California Adventure park, including the 12-acre Cars Land, Buena Vista Street and the Carthay Circle Restaurant, almost complete, there are even more reasons to visit.

And this summer, both parks will open each day at 8 a.m. and offer increased entertainment, giving you and your family more time to stay and play. At Disney California Adventure park, we’re adding an additional showing of “Aladdin – a Musical Spectacular” and Pixar Play Parade will be presented up to twice daily. At Disneyland park, you’ll find more shows and characters at Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree and increased performances at the Tomorrowland Terrace every day of the week, and the singing sensation “Voices of Liberty” performing at the Main Street Opera House.

We’re sharing the details here on the ticket prices, which also include increases to Disneyland Resort Annual Passports. Annual Passholders recognize that their investment pays for itself after just a few visits. Our California-based Annual Passholders have the added benefit and flexibility of a monthly payment program. This year, we’ll continue to offer unique passholder-exclusive entertainment and experiences, along with 10-20% discounts on select food and merchandise. As an example, you already know that Annual Passholders were invited to special viewings to celebrate the 20th anniversary of “Fantasmic!” And later this summer, Passholders also will have early access to the parks through a new Annual Passholder Early Entry program – just for them. Details on this program were announced earlier this week here.

There are other ways to save when you visit. The popular 1-Day Park Hopper Ticket gives guests access to both parks on the same day, or if you are planning on playing with us longer, multi-day tickets also offer a variety of options for you to save on your California vacation. All updated pricing can be found here. The information will also be available at http://disneyland.disney.go.com/tickets on May 20.

Ryan on May 18th, 2012 at 7:15 pm

I have an annual passport that I bought at the current prices. With these price increases, does this mean that my monthly payments will increase to reflect the new prices even though I have already signed a contract stating that my payments will be made at the amount set by the current pricing?

Robin on May 18th, 2012 at 7:20 pm

I just double checked that! The cast member I spoke to let me know that there will be no increase in monthly payments because your rates are contracted in. If you decide to renew your passport, then you will be paying the new price.

Tyler on May 18th, 2012 at 7:27 pm

What day do these prices take effect? And if I buy a ticket at the disney store don’t i have like a year to activate it?
